A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UC MOUNTAINEERING CLUB

April 5, 2008

Dear Esteemed UCMC Alumni:

The Mountaineering Club of today is not the Mountaineering Club of yesterday. Today we find ourselves in a very tenuous position, such that the fate and quality of the club in years to come is, in my opinion, dangling on the edge of a knife. Each year our funding from the University is reduced and supplemental income from club and whitewater dues and the Gear Auction is not enough to maintain our gear; instead, these funds are committed to paying the rent for the off-campus storage of our boats and for paying for UC vans when it is necessary to rent them about once a year.

As the Club Sports Board (the source of our funding) accepts new clubs into the organization while maintaining a fixed (or even reduced) budget, it is necessary for the UCMC to become more and more self-sustaining as the years go on as the CSB allotment becomes smaller. In attempts to do so, we have raised club and whitewater dues for both students and alumni; this increase was also in response to several incidents where some of our club gear and boats were mistreated. For the past several years we have been unable to purchase new gear or repair the damaged due to our lack of funds, and so we are in desperate need of assistance.

Therefore, this year we are holding a fundraiser for the purpose of maintaining our gear inventory in the appropriate state it needs to be in for safety. I and the club are asking current club members and their families and club alumni if they could spare some (or a lot of) money to donate to the club for the sole purpose of repairing gear and buying new, such that every club member could enjoy it. We have created a separate bank account for any money received from the fundraiser so that it can be placed into it and used only for gear, and nothing else. If we all give a little (or again, “a lot” is always welcome, too), we can restore our gear to the state that it should be in; the result being that every club member or alumni will get something back.

In short, the UCMC needs your help. And, if you do help, you’ll be contributing to something that you will be able to use yourself when you stop by the gear shack to check things out- and that is better gear.

Sincerely,

Emily Stover
UCMC President 07-08
